Elevator Repair Service, one of New York City's most innovative experimental theater companies, is working on a new production of William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, and the 92nd Street Y (92Y) will be hosting a preview at its Kaufmann Concert Hall, Thursday, July 14, at 8 p.m. At the preview the ensemble will offer a short excerpt from Measure for Measure followed by a conversation with the company's artistic director, John Collins. Writer, editor, curator, and professor Tom Sellar will moderate the event. For more information on and tickets to the Measure for Measure event, click here.
For 25 years, Elevator Repair Service (ERS) has been staging texts ranging from Supreme Court transcripts (Arguendo, 2013) to playwright Sibyl Kempson's Fondly, Collette Richland (2015). Its adaptations of classic American literature—especially Gatz (2010), a performance of the entire text of The Great Gatsby that The New York Times called “the most remarkable achievement in theater of the decade”—have established the downtown troupe as a major creative force.
ERS is currently in early stages of work on Measure for Measure, co-produced by The Public Theater, where it will premiere in an upcoming season.
A Jewish organization founded in 1874, 92Y is a nonprofit cultural and community center welcoming people of all backgrounds and perspectives to its many programs and initiatives, including wide-ranging conversations with the world's best minds; a range of programming in the performing, visual, and literary arts; fitness and sports programs; and activities for children and families. 92Y is reimagining what it means to be a community center in the digital age with initiatives like the award-winning #GivingTuesday, launched by 92Y in 2012 and now recognized across the United States and in a growing number of regions worldwide as a day to celebrate and promote giving.
