In his final season of plays as the Royal Shakespeare Company's artistic director, Michael Boyd has invited some of the United Kingdom's most talented directors, writers, and artists to present Shakespeare, a Jacobean classic never performed at the RSC, and world premieres of two new plays.
The season opens at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in January with The Winter's Tale, directed by Lucy Bailey, which will then go on tour. Then a single company of actors will perform three Shakespeare plays:
The world premiere of a new play The Empress, written by Tanika Gupta and directed by Emma Rice, opens the 2013 season in the Swan Theatre. Though Empress of India, Queen Victoria never visited her subjects there, but they came to London in the thousands. The play tells the story of the Queen's growing attachment to one of her Indian manservants.
A single company of actors then take on three plays:
Priority booking is available for the summer 2013 season from Sept. 14, 2012. Public booking opens on Oct. 15. RSC Members and Supporters will receive full details of the season and their Priority Booking in September.
